Intro
Elan's lightweight freeride series has been completely overhauled with new geometries across the board, but continues to feature its hallmark Carbon Deck and Amphibio technology. The former replaces the classic titanal layer to keep the weight low, but provides the same damping and precision on compact terrain. The latter is the asymmetric shape of the tip with rocker on the outside and camber on the inside, so you have more edge contact only where it's needed and more ease and lift when initiating turns.
On the snow
This year we decided to take a slightly heavier ski for a turn uphill (weighing around 150 g more than its pure touring sibling), convinced that this mania surrounding ski weight is bound to come to an end at some point. In fact, the difference in ascent is barely noticeable; the Ripstick more than holds its own unless you want to go up against a chronometer. On the downhill, it immediately feels good and is balanced and smooth along the entire length. Initiating turns is easy, the shovel is soft yet damp and there's no dangerous torsion on hard snow, only a little annoying oversteer when releasing. As with all skis without titanal, it does tend to chatter and lose precision on hardpack, but at the right speed it works well for trying out steep terrain for the first time. Flotation isn't its strong point; the rocker is pretty shallow and the ski finds it hard to glide, requiring a more set back stance than most of its competitors.
Lab
Slightly concave at the tip and tail, flat in the middle, perfect after ten passes through the machine. Reasonably good edges 1.4 x 1.7 mm at 90°, base edge 1°. Overall a fairly average finish, but fully detuned at tip and tail; could go out on the snow as is.
