Intro
Minimum effort on the uphill, maximum performance on the down. That's the thinking behind Salomon's MTN touring line. Last year we tested the MTN 86 W Carbon, perfect for technical terrain and clocking up vertical. The MTN 86 W Pro shares the Carbon's All-Mountain Profile with a medium camber that provides good edge grip on firm snow, rockered tip, and the same sandwich construction along its entire length. The only difference lies in the materials: while the Carbon has a carob core reinforced with basalt and carbon fiber, the Pro has a carob/poplar blend reinforced with basalt fiber. And you can really feel the difference.
On the snow
If the Carbon needs a firm hand, the Pro is more docile. It's intuitive, without requiring energetic riding to get a precise response. On the contrary, if you push it too hard you risk the opposite. Its strength lies in its agility; it turns easily on all types of terrain, making it a versatile ski for taking on big verticals or gliding through powder. The Cork Damplifier technology (cork inserts in the tip) dampens vibrations without weighing it down. This is a soft, fluid ski that doesn't skimp on precision and edge hold. In ascent it'll take you anywhere, the weight tells you all you need to know. Recommended for improving skiers, for more experienced skiers the Carbon is better. It can also be used as an all-mountain ski for those days when the lifts are calling.
Lab
Moderately concave, slightly different between the two skis, still there after 10 passes through the machine. Shallow structure applied with a hint of wax. Reasonably good edges 1.5 x 1.6 mm at 88.7°, base edge 1.9° (excessive). Rough finish, tip and tail need detuning, protruding sidewall. Definitely needs tuning.
