Intro
While its shape is identical to the MTN 86 Carbon, it uses different materials, pairing dense poplar with lightweight, responsive carob, getting rid of the carbon laminate and keeping the basalt fiber also used in the top of the line model. It otherwise shares all the same characteristics as its sibling, including the same profile, with 16% rocker at the tip and 12% at the tail, the available lengths and the turn radiuses from 16 to 19 meters. The only other thing that changes is, of course, the weight, which comes in at less than 100 g heavier all told.
On the snow
If there's a ski that sets the bar on how to add a few grams—a little more robust wood here, a little less laminate there—to reach the perfect balance between performance and weight, it's the MTN Pro. It's fun, easy to handle, intuitive and versatile. It lets you do anything, helps less technically demanding skiers, doesn't tire the legs of the pros, and brings a smile to your face. Most importantly it has just the right amount of flex, neither stiff nor too soft (it'll cope with a few slashes without being caught out), with a nice soft, versatile tip. It loves medium/short turns, tolerates a little extra speed, is stable (though less so than the TX 88 and the Machine 1 Micro), is fun on moguls, prefers powder but isn't put off by hardpack. As you would expect from a light ski, it isn't specifically for steep descents or couloirs, but it's robust enough to take them on, especially if you stick to skiing over jump turns.
Lab
Very concave at the tip and tail, still not flat after 10 passes through the machine. Medium structure, waxed. Fairly good edges 1.4 x 1.5 mm at 89.2°, base edge 0.95°. Slightly rusty, sharpness a little uneven. Need to tune the edges and flatten the base.
