Intro
Whiteland is an artisanal ski manufacturer located in the Italian province of Novara, inspired by Alagna Valsesia, with a keen focus on details and on materials. The Balma 95 is the company's first ski, an all-rounder, and is joined by the 110 for deep-pow days. It's one of the few skis to have a practically flat camber throughout the ski, a tip without much rocker, and sidecut right to the end. The wood-grain topsheet (we tried the customizable version) looks great, and the core is carbon fiber and fiberglass wrapped around paulownia and poplar wood. It has thick, strong edges and an all-black, scratch-resistant base.
On the snow
The length we tested, the 172 cm, brings out the groomer nature of this ski. The flat camber makes starting the turn and transition very easy, and edge grip is excellent in tight and mid-radius turns. But it's not as responsive as we'd like exiting the turn. Super agile and nicely stable in chop and on moguls, it's like a snowplow for having a great time both on the groomed slope and in the choppy shoulders. It doesn't excel in powder, for its short length, limited rocker and thick tip that doesn't flex, which makes it difficult to float. It's a nice resort ski that'll work great 90% of the time, but you'll need to pair it with another ski better suited to ascents and soft snow. It's really good for spring skiing and challenging slopes through steep gorges, but it takes good physical fitness to have any strength left in the legs after an ascent.
Lab
Concave at tip and tail, not totally fixable after 9 runs through the tuning machine. A hint of structure, not waxed. Good edges 2.1 x 2.2 mm at 91-89°, base edge 1.3°. A bit of rust, needs tuning before hitting the snow.
