Intro
It’s not easy to change a model responsible for revolutionizing a category and setting the standards for the modern touring boot. But the competition is forging ahead and, after several seasons, this release represents a completely new boot, rather than merely a restyled one. The project’s materials and mission remain unaltered: to create a nimble climber that offers the mobility of the best reference boots in the category, but which skis like a four-buckle alpine boot. The appearance is slightly more streamlined, similar to its most recent competitor boots.
Walking
Compared to its peers, cuff travel is excellent and the low weight makes these an ideal partner for major skiing missions with significant vertical. When skiing, they feel light and functional on open terrain and even slightly more committing lines, thanks to their streamlined shape that lends itself to more technical terrain. The comfortable liner cradles the foot in all the right places, contributing to the sense of support on technical terrain. It does lose a few points for bootpacking, as there are boots out there that feel smoother.
Lab
Foot entry is quite easy for an overlap, though never going to be like a cabrio. Once on, it feels great. The fit is tight and very snug but free from hotspots and voids. The liner is light but padded in all the right places and overall feels very comfortable. The minimalist wired buckles are easy to use, but the wire could tend to get stuck in the buckle catchplate. Ski/walk lever works fine, with minimal play in walk mode.
Skiing
When pointed downhill though, this boot has many qualities and lives up to expectations: it’s extremely precise, almost like an alpine boot; it has very progressive flex, responding well to all inputs without much effort and without buckling or a hard-stop. Rearward support is good, which helps the skier recover a central stance. Edge-to-edge transition is fast, a fact aided by the cuff height. On challenging snow or crud, the elasticity of the plastic aids control of the ski-binding setup and helps dampen more powerful inputs. If we had to nitpick, we’d say it’s flex is a tad less rigid than what’s stated.
