Intro
Sitting just below the S/Lab MTN Summit in Salomon’s lineup, this model is identical to it, except for the cuff, which has a fiberglass-reinforced spine instead of carbon fiber, and the absence of the second upper power strap. There is also the Pure version (still with a Boa dial but recycled PU cuff) and the Sport version, which has the same materials as the Pure but a traditional buckle instead of the Boa. In essence, the MTN Summit Pro is a top-of-the-range boot with a slightly smoother flex and reduced price tag.
Walking
Not the best out there, but it does exceed the real needs of any great climber. Friction is imperceptible, and the Boa holds the heel almost completely still and closes adequately at the front. As on the S/Lab MTN Summit, the plastic ‘Touring Belt’, which is regulated by the Boa cable, effectively secures the instep. The roomy toe box provides enough space for the forefoot to spread while walking, and the liner is almost identical to the S/Lab MTN Summit. If you’re undecided what to get, the MTN Summit Pro won’t disappoint.
Lab
Like all the other ski touring boots produced by the Annecy-based company, it fully embodies the Salomon philosophy: alpine-boot-like ease of entry, which requires no head-scratching and minimal effort. Adjusting it is also straightforward, from the precise Boa with cable running through guides, to the 45 mm buckled power strap on the cuff and the unusual horizontally actioned ski/walk selector: the lever is short, compact and practical, and eliminates any risk of it snagging on terrain features.
Skiing
The feel is pretty similar to the S/Lab MTN Summit, but the overall flex pattern is quite soft, bearing in mind that even on the top-of-the-range model it’s progressive and not very firm. It’s a detail that means as you flex the boot, you expect power to ramp up, but it never really arrives. Probably with inclusion of the second upper strap like its sibling this difference would be less noticeable. It retains a fit designed to cradle the foot well, especially the heel and midfoot, whilst leaving more space in the forefoot and instep. Aft support is reassuring, edge control responsive, and the heel well-anchored—all achieved by correctly cinching the Boa and thus also the Touring Belt, which turns out to be one of the most successful elements of this well-balanced product. 100 euros cheaper and 30 grams lighter than the S/Lab MTN Summit.
