Intro
After making such a positive impression last season, both Gea models are back in the guide. This time around we tested both the Gea and Gea RS. The former has a Pebax shell, the latter, Grilamid. While the Gea has a more widespread appeal, the RS is for demanding skiers who want to go hard in descent, but also a boot that feels good on the uphill. A classic from the Italian ski maker, it never goes out of style.
Walking
Don't be put off by the high cuff. The convex shape of the liner around the calf prevents any unwanted pressure. It has an impressive range of motion so you can cover lots of ground no problem. The shell buckle with cord lets you find just the right setting in ascent and keeps the foot firmly in place even on hardpack and traverses. It has a nice, natural stride and the slim liner makes it feel springy and agile.
Lab
As with any self-respecting Scarpa boot, the (Pro Flex Performance) liner is made from Intuition foam, which wears out less than the competition over time. The foot feels supported by a lightweight layer that facilitates impulse transmission. The buckles are intuitive, the one over the instep really holding the ankle in place for precision in descent. It has a classic ski/walk mechanism and micro-adjust Booster strap.
Skiing
If on the uphill the high cuff is nothing to worry about, on the down it's key. The rear support is excellent, up there with a resort boot. As soon as you buckle up and point your tips down towards the valley, it feels responsive and intuitive. The perceived flex is stiff for a touring model that also feels progressive and precise. The carbon injected shell lets you charge as hard as you like, providing excellent power transmission. Ideal for demanding skiers who live to shred; a versatile boot for both freeride and venturing into the backcountry.
