Intro
The Gea is the women's equivalent of the Maestrale, with an upgraded version available in the form of the RS. Completely overhauled last season, the Gea is the more mainstream option of the two. Ideal for modern touring, it's nimble and comfortable on the way up, and skis like a resort boot on the way down. It's the latter, together with better cuff mobility, that sets it apart from the previous iteration.
Walking
The cuff rotation is generous to the fore and aft. The foot is well supported and the fit precise, which translates into excellent edge hold on tricky terrain or when sidehilling. The Pebax shell makes it light and soft enough to take on challenging verticals without too much effort. The Vibram Cayman LT sole with Traction Lug technology provides excellent grip when bootpacking or climbing.
Lab
Entry is easy for a boot in this category and once you're in it feels incredibly comfortable, you just need to take care to position the cuff flaps correctly. The well-padded Pro Flex Touring liner has an elastic strap over the instep for increased precision, and you can also add an extra spoiler around the calf. The buckle on the cuff is excellent in terms of shape and efficiency; the cable on the shell needs to be properly adjusted before setting off, for the right fit.
Skiing
Switching to downhill mode is incredibly quick, with a super efficient ski/walk mechanism and the other buckles that, once you've adjusted them to your liking, keep the foot firmly in place. Compared to the Gea RS, it lacks a little oomph, the softer flex on the cuff giving way a little at the end of a turn. For heavier, and particularly more powerful skiers, it could prove a little too soft for blasting high-speed turns, but for intermediate skiers at more controlled speeds the support is more than sufficient, especially for a three-buckle boot. Impressively versatile, it would work as a one-boot quiver.
