Intro
This new version has not only an edgy all-black look, but a new cuff and finally a new closure system (three buckles and a power strap). The BOA on the liner, that we liked so much on the previous version, has been removed. The weight is in line with the competition, and there's lots of volume in the shell, as we've come to expect from Scott. The rivets are mostly changeable with a simple screwdriver and an Allen wrench.
Walking
The range of movement is superb, around that of the Maestrale or thereabouts, but is more than enough for anyone wanting to take on big verticals with skis of around 95-100 mm. It's a little limited when compared with the best in the category due to the friction between the cuff and shell that you can feel even when bootpacking. Good grip and stride guaranteed by the Vibram sole, even on icy, rocky terrain.
Lab
The liner is a thing of beauty, providing excellent support and a good level of comfort; it's definitely up there with the best of those tested this year. Putting it on is a cinch, your foot glides into the shell with minimal interference. The opposite is true of the buckle closure, which is pretty stiff, and the cuff flaps which tend to get stuck together. The ski/walk mechanism just flips down and works seamlessly.
Skiing
The improvements on the previous version become evident on the downhill. The support provided by the new buckles and power strap helps anyone who needs a load-bearing boot, and makes life easier for anyone wanting to turn up the tempo in descent. The flex is initially pretty stiff, then it softens, but it's manageable enough when you get used to it and are strong enough to deal with it. When pushed to the limit, it bulges slightly and the heel tends to move around. The comfort and softness of the Cosmos make it suited to long days on the snow with lots of transitions and tricky snow conditions, even for less experienced tourers.
