Intro
After having skied the 4-Quattro XT last season, we thought it only right to take its SL sibling out for a few runs. There are a few differences; the XT has a Grilamid cuff and shell and a flex of 130, while the SL is made completely from Pebax and has a flex of 120. So does that make it more docile than the XT? On paper yes, but despite the softer plastics the SL proved to be a real weapon on the downhill. With the added bonus of a little extra comfort.
Walking
Of the four-buckle models, it's one of the best in terms of walkability. The cuff rotation is impressive for the category and with the buckles open to let the Pebax tongue flex as much as possible, the forward motion is very good indeed. Rearward movement is a little more restricted, but then otherwise it would be a Light boot. We always recommend a good bootfitting, but especially in this case considering the rather tricky fit. The Gripwalk sole with RECCO reflector isn't designed for mixed terrain but holds up.
Lab
Entry and exit are pretty easy, though once you've got it on the volume isn't particularly generous, due to the shell that tapers downwards. Anyone with a wide foot should either see how effective a bootfitting would be, or consider sizing up. The liner is well padded without being too bulky, the Speed Lock 4 ski/walk mechanism is intuitive and precise, and the four buckles are easy to adjust.
Skiing
Skiing the 4-Quattro SL, two comparisons come to mind: it's as ferocious as a tiger, yet precise as a Swiss watch. This boot gives as good as it gets; the more you drive it, the more it responds. The intuition 4Pro Flex SL liner is clearly designed with the descent in mind, the tongue is super stiff and it gives incredible support to the shin. Once closed, the four buckles provide unbeatable precision and a stiffness up there with that of a resort boot. The perceived flex is very stiff indeed and it's unbelievably responsive. It's genuinely hard to find fault with this boot in descent. Just one bit of advice: if you really want to charge, and with this boot you can, maybe adjust the forward lean a little further forward than the factory setting.
