Intro
The TX series includes three models, the 88, 99 and 94—the latter being a new addition. The classic construction with straight sidecut tip to tail, paulownia core topped with a layer of carbon and sandwiched between two sheets of fiberglass makes it a decidedly attractive weight for its class. Kästle's collection also includes the TX UP series, also designed for ski touring but with a focus on affordability over weight, and the ZX, a freeride-adjacent line that is light enough for short uphills.
On the snow
One of the most elegant, well-finished skis tested, it has an understated graphic and the brand's hallmark Hollowtech shovel to dampen chatter. It's well balanced and holds up on all classic touring terrain, with no nasty surprises in terms of responsiveness. It initiates turns easily, with the tail giving the right amount of boost when releasing. Float isn't one of its strong points, but if you don't overdo the speed, it's fun to ski through the snow. Edge grip on hardpack is good considering its weight and construction. This could be the right ski for improving skiers to make the leap to the next level, or for those who want to ski big verticals where you could come across all sorts of conditions in descent. In ascent, it instills confidence even on the most technical terrain.
Lab
Ski tuned before being sent for testing. Almost flat base, structure not well applied but well waxed. Reasonably good edges 1.8 x 1.6 mm at 90° (straight), very pronounced base edge 1.2°.
Edge angles uneven and coarse, need setting.
