Intro
Last year this won women's ski of the year as it was judged as the most well-balanced and powerful of all the women's models tested. This year we wanted to take it out for another spin, but in very different conditions. If in 2023 it performed beautifully on deep, soft snow, in 2024 we put it to the test on hardpack and crust. There's no doubt it's built for powder, but it knows how to handle itself in other situations. Compared to the men's model, it has a slightly softer flex, but the construction and materials are the same.
On the snow
The Radical 97 is the ultimate one-ski quiver. Despite an underfoot width of almost freeride proportions, in ascent it's nimble and light and can even handle challenging climbs. But when you finally point your tips down the hill, it really lets you know where its heart lies. The steep rocker at tip and tail makes it perfect for deep snow where you can floor it without worrying about losing control. On other types of snow it remains nice and stable, if a little more tricky to handle. You can get a nice carve as long as you find the right balance between weight and power. Turn initiation is easy and intuitive, but don't let your guard down. It's also nicely responsive on groomers, and is definitely an option for using on-piste now and again. Perfect for tourers who are strong skiers but also don't wuss out in the face of serious vertical.
Lab
Extremely concave along the entire length of the ski, still not resolved after 10 runs through the machine. Smoothed, but no structure or wax. Good edges, 1.7 x 1.8 mm at 1°, base edge 1°. The edges haven't been tuned at all, so it's essential to do so before taking it out on the snow.
