Intro
Unchanged from last year, this ski is the latest in the Black Ops Alpineer line, and in the Seek 7 line before that. Escaper is the French brand's touring line, and this ski is the mid-range model, alongside the 80, 97 and 105 widths. It features modern lines, a broad, lightweight tip (with honeycomb construction) with a pronounced, extended rise, and a tapered tail to balance release and snow feel. This ski is designed for a fun, easy ride.
On the snow
A waist width of 87 or thereabouts, paired with a length of around 170, is standard in lightweight ski mountaineering for good skiability. Just a few millimeters makes all the difference, for a versatile ski that's fun to ride. On a par with the Hagan Core Carbon 89 Lite or the Atomic Backland 88, the Escaper 87 Nano fills this role to perfection. Fun (but not excessively lively), friendly and instinctive, this ski amazed more than one of our testers. It's easy to ski and instills confidence, rewarding good posture while also accommodating a little uncertainty. It's stable underfoot and has a tail you can lean on when needed (providing support and spring). The tip floats when you're balanced and helps to enter and round off turns and change radius, but it won't let you ski on autopilot. On hardpack it provides excellent edge bite, which it finds by molding to the terrain.
