Intro
At first glance, there are no major changes in shape or weight for the Backland 95, but the core of this ski has been completely overhauled. Fiberglass has been almost entirely with poplar wood, and the production process has been optimized to minimize waste. The result is about a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions for every pair of skis produced. Within the new Backland family, which includes a whopping 12 models waist widths ranging from 65 to 117 mm, the 95 is designed to be the perfect compromise between downhill fun and ease on the climb.
On the snow
DNA shows off its strong genes again in this new version. It's still an extremely lightweight ski that excels on the climb and at altitude. In technical sections and hard traverses, it helps even those who may not have divine technical skill to stay out of trouble. Tip construction is super thin and edgeless, with notches for race skins, which means you need to be careful to avoid any hard impact that could damage the structure. On the descent, it's not the sort of ski that feels amazing from the start. They need to be broken in a bit to get just the right feel for them. When pressed hard, the tip tends to close a bit too much and can surprise you coming out of the turn. The tail, though, is very stiff and reactive, but unforgiving. Once you find the right balance and push it to the right speed, it's a precise ski on hard snow and great fun in powder, where the scooped tip helps you float.
Lab
Concave at the tip and uneven from waist to tail, flat after 8 runs through the tuning machine. No structure, limited wax. Decent edges 1.4 x 1.7 mm at 89°, base edge 1.5°. Limited finish, edged to be replaced at tip and tail, phenolic sidewall higher than the edges.
