Intro
Atomic has completely revamped their UL range—the lightest in their collection, which includes two race models—using modern construction for light skiing and a focus on sustainability. The 86 replaces the 85, using the same geometry as the 86 SL but substituting the high-strength fiberglass with carbon fiber for an even more responsive alternative within the vast collection of light skis from the Austrian brand.
On the snow
Like its previous iteration, it's the most responsive of the line, in part thanks to its slightly more pronounced sidecut, which tightens the radius by a couple of meters. This is also down to the lightweight yet stiff construction, which you need to know how to control, the tip requires precise handling otherwise it'll take over. Not an intuitive ski, it's pretty unforgiving, but skiers with the right technique and a centered stance will be able to get to grips with it after taking it out once (though don't let your guard down), even turning up the dial to medium turns. It's a demanding ski for demanding skiers who are deft on their feet. With this in mind, consider only very light tuning—particularly on hard, aggressive snow—which will make it feel a little more like the SL line. It takes on all types of snow with ease, including crust which it was not built for.
