Intro
A Dynafit boot in the light category: heavier than the more race-oriented Mezzalama, but lighter than the TLT X, with which it shares its shape, setup, liner and last, but not the materials. The Blacklight has a carbon cuff and carbon-loaded Grilamid shell. So, despite belonging in the same category, it's a different kind of boot.
Walking
This boot is up there with the best in terms of fore and aft range of motion. The gait cycle has two distinct phases, the toe off being a little abrupt, but on the whole is very free, it just takes a little getting used to. The one touch ski/walk mechanism is a real plus, not just for speed tourers. The dial really tightens over the instep, so if you're sensitive in this area you can loosen it when in walk mode, which is quick and easy even when wearing gloves.
Lab
If only all light boots were this easy to put on. Closure is fast and practical. The race-ready power strap is connected to the ski/walk mechanism so with one motion you can close your boot and go. The dial is too loose, and you need to give it several turns before it even begins to tighten. Once you get it where you need it to be, it locks in the instep, but not the forefoot, which still has too much wiggle room. The midfoot though is well supported and the heel stays firmly in its pocket.
Skiing
When you put it on, the cuff and shell materials really give you the sensation that you're wearing a solid boot that won't bulge under pressure. This impression is reinforced by the liner, one of the firmest in this segment, which aids precision and doesn't cause pressure points, even pre-bootfitting. When initiating a turn there's no support at first, but it soon arrives and power transmission to the ski edge is fast and direct. The forward lean is generous, and you can feel the low closure of the cuff, but if you mount the thin strap that comes with it that changes.
