Intro
The hottest trend in the world of ski boots is to create hybrids that straddle two categories, in terms of both weight and quality. The Backland XTD Carbon 115 W is one such boot. It takes the uphill performance of the Backland and fuses it with the stiffness and downhill capabilities of the Hawx. Perhaps a little ahead of its time, but intriguing nonetheless.
Walking
This boot is like a tractor in walk mode. It's very soft and a little bulky, but you can go anywhere and do anything in it. The sole grips rocky surfaces well and the stride is smooth. As cozy as a sheepskin boot, it leaves your ankle nice and free but keeps the instep and forefoot locked in place. The superb cuff rotation guarantees fluid, natural movement.
Lab
It's one of the easiest boots to put on, thanks to the Hybrid Overlap shape of the plastics and the softness of the liner. Once it's on, it is super toasty. The stitching at the base of the tongue can get in the way a little so you may need a good bootfitting. The buckle system is pretty intuitive but take care when positioning the cables. The 400 mm booster strap stays firmly in place but isn't easy to use with gloves.
Skiing
In descent though, it's a little perplexing. If you didn't know the weight you'd be very happy, as with the mobility and agility it offers in ascent, you'd expect much less support in descent; yet it feels like a burlier boot. The weight however (around 1,300 g; 2.85 pounds) corresponds to a touring boot, so it should meet certain standards to justify the difference in weight compared to a light boot. The stated flex pattern is higher than the real flex. A heavy skier will easily cause the soft, not-very-progressive cuff plastics to deform. A lighter skier will feel more at home. Works best for low-speed skidded turns and short turns.
