Intro
Of Atomic's large, and very popular, Backland collection, the Pro W boot is one of the most versatile models. Halfway between the fast & light UL line and the more robust XTD, it still falls more towards the lightweight, uphill focused side of things, but with more support in descent. There's no carbon in the women's version, and the flex is slightly softer, but otherwise it's immediately obvious that it shares its DNA with the men's version. An all-rounder that works well as a one-boot quiver.
Walking
The nice mix of support provided by the liner (without feeling heavy) and unrestricted movement makes it one of the best boots out there. The range of motion is impressive and allows for a very natural, effortless stride, but a complete lack of friction also plays its part. When sidehilling it provides confidence-boosting support, even on mixed terrain. Walkability is good whether skinning or bootpacking, for clocking up endless vertical.
Lab
The volumes are evenly distributed and comfortable, but the forefoot feels nicely supported (more so than the men's version), a welcome improvement compared to previous iterations where the toes had a little too much room. The liner, though light, is padded where necessary and is actually pretty supportive. It's very stable at the instep, partly thanks to the Velcro that fixes the gaiter in front. The tongue is rigid and the rear reinforcement is excellent.
Skiing
The Pro W also passes with flying colors in descent, doing better than the men's version. The ski/walk mechanism is one of the best: it locks immediately and firmly into place. The stiff tongue and power strap combo provides excellent support to the shin and the snug fit around the foot and ankle make it pretty precise on the downhill. Don't ski it too aggressively (or pair it with too stiff a ski), otherwise it may bulge a little, but it's nicely balanced on the whole. The rear support is excellent.
