Intro
The future is on our doorstep: this Salt Lake City-based ski maker is proof positive that a new world of materials is opening up for the ski industry. The main focus of WINDR is sustainability, which is why they only use materials they've developed independently and which contain high percentages of eco-friendly algae and bio-based resins. The Algalcore core is crafted using bio-based polyurethane and locally sourced aspen, and sidewalls are constructed by injecting a liquid PU directly into channels along the sides of the ski. Another innovation: the ski is available in two different profiles, one with a traditional camber and a model with a reverse camber for pulling newschool tricks.
On the snow
Right from the off, these skis feel surprisingly intuitive and reliable. They don't really excel in any particular way, but nor do they have any obvious defects. It's fun to ski and carve on a wide variety of terrain types, and is stable on hardpack and at speed. It is not, though, a ski for arcing super-large railroad-style alpine carves. Better to temper things by letting the edges skid out a touch. A US-styled ski with a predilection for slashing. We'd recommend this as a one-ski quiver for the average freerider looking for a tool that floats well at speed or as a first fat ski for first-time freeriders. This is not a pure fat ski, which is light enough for tackling backcountry outings of medium length and difficulty near resorts if mounted with a step-in binding. Ideal also for mounting with a pin binding for a more touring-focused setup. From tree skiing to more committing lines, this is a predictable tool that forgives the odd backseat stance and sloppy technique typical of freeride.
Lab
Alternating concave and convex sections along the entire length, not removed after 10 runs through the tuning machine. No structure or wax. Excellent edges 2.1 x 2 mm, finishing irregular on both skis. Tuning 1°. Edges blunt throughout the length except for tip and tail. Significant work required.
