Intro
A cornerstone of the German ski maker's all-mountain freeride series, the Mantra 108 remains unchanged since last year apart from a new graphic. Its profile stands out for its 3D radius sidecut: three different radiuses, longer at the tip and tail for increased stability at speed, shorter at the waist to aid slow, tight turns. With a traditional camber underfoot and shallow rocker at the tip and tail, and poplar/beech hybrid core, this series is designed to take on all kinds of Alpine backcountry terrain.

On the snow
It takes a few turns to get used to the sensation of stability and solidity that this heavy-duty ski provides; it both requires and rewards excellent technique and physical fitness. There could be nothing further from new school style, it demands the serious commitment of Alpine riders, able to get that giant slalom-esque aggressive edge bite. A high-speed missile, it prefers wide turns and doesn't stop for small backcountry obstacles. You can do straight cliff jumps but it doesn't help rotations. A badass, burly ski, it's also good for days spent inbounds at the side of the slope, on moguls, chop, as well as the odd narrow couloir on extra compact snow. With hardly any sidecut, minimalist geometry, a flat tail, and shallow tip rocker, it requires a rider who is truly deft on their feet, and prefers step-in bindings for improved power transmission.

Lab

Safety, a culture of doubt

Beyond the basic definition, there’s nothing as variable as snow conditions and the human psyche when under emotional stress. That's why, after purchasing the right self-rescue kit and airbag backpack, it’s paramount you do your research, train, scrutinize your decisions and, if necessary, opt for plan B. And, at least for now, don’t rely on artificial intelligence.

Intro
Products for mountaineers

Once you’ve chosen your skis, boots and bindings, your thoughts then turn to harnesses, crampons, ice axe and helmet, though perhaps not everyone, and not straight away. While it’s true that when starting out, especially for those transitioning from resort skiing who just want to start surfing some pow, the important thing is to get self-rescue equipment. It’s equally true, however, that the sport we love is a combination of two words: skiing and mountaineering.
