Intro
The Blaze series features a vast array of models with waists ranging from 82 mm up to 114 mm, the fattest ski we tested and reviewed last year. This is a segment dedicated to freeride with crossover weights and performance. A sort of halfway house between the more pro skier-oriented Revolts and the Rise, which was designed mainly with touring in mind. The tip and tail rockers start so close to the ski's center it almost seems like these are a full-rocker model. This is not confirmed in their catalog but the impression is of having virtually no camber underfoot. Complex construction with the 4D Radius Drive, four sizes of sidewall radius, shorter at the centre and longer towards the ends.
On the snow
The distinctive shape creates a pleasant sensation of maneuverability straight off, turning and carving like a kid's toy, making it a playful ski for a wide range of skiers. Excellent candidate as an entry-level ski for backcountry freeride and for use on the skin track. Ideal for all skiing levels up to advanced. It could present limits only for the most demanding of skiers. The progressive rocker keeps the nose up nicely in powder, helping guide short- and medium-radius turns conducted at slow speeds, and the tail is responsive when exiting turns. It provides excellent edge hold on hardpack, and performs admirably in the wide range of snow conditions you're likely to find during long alpine descents. All these characteristics make this a great candidate as a reliable companion for most winter missions. Mount it with a tech or King Pin binding if you want to clock up plenty of vertical, or a lightweight step-in for pure, unadulterated freeride.
Lab
Very concave along the entire length, not fixed after 10 runs through the machine. No structure, just sanded and waxed. Good edges 1.9 x 1.8 mm at 89°, base edge 1.3°. Some rust on the edges and a protruding sidewall that needs fixing. Tuning essential.
