Intro
Together with the JJ, this is by far the fattest ski we tested this year; it goes without saying that it's destined for use solely off-piste. A brand-new model bearing all the hallmarks that have made the QST series one of Salomon's most popular, it has a carob/poplar core with 30% recycled plastic sidewalls, and a slick look, with a shocking pink base and eye-catching topsheet that younger skiers will love. The pure freeride profile is just 44% camber/effective edge, the rest is rocker for maximum surfiness.

On the snow
A ski of this size cannot but float like a dream, but it also manages to feel light and buoyant when tracing turns and is super damp on tracked out snow. This is not a purely new school ski, rather a fully-fledged big mountain charger, one that is stable at high speeds, devours anything in its way and offers a solid landing off the back of big airs. A weapon of choice for pro riders that also suits strong, skilled skiers able to appreciate its floaty feel in powder. If you're feeling particularly optimistic, you could mount a tech binding, but control and power transmission are so much better with a step-in. There are only three lengths available, but they cover each segment of this ski's target market: shorter for those moving into freeride, longer for more advanced skiers.

Lab
Nice flat base, kudos. No structure, little wax. Thin edges 1.45 x 2 mm at 88°, base edge 0.5°, signs of a damaged grindstone on one of the skis. Reasonably good finish both on the base and edges, once structure and wax have been applied it's ready to hit the snow.

Safety, a culture of doubt

Beyond the basic definition, there’s nothing as variable as snow conditions and the human psyche when under emotional stress. That's why, after purchasing the right self-rescue kit and airbag backpack, it’s paramount you do your research, train, scrutinize your decisions and, if necessary, opt for plan B. And, at least for now, don’t rely on artificial intelligence.

Intro
Products for mountaineers

Once you’ve chosen your skis, boots and bindings, your thoughts then turn to harnesses, crampons, ice axe and helmet, though perhaps not everyone, and not straight away. While it’s true that when starting out, especially for those transitioning from resort skiing who just want to start surfing some pow, the important thing is to get self-rescue equipment. It’s equally true, however, that the sport we love is a combination of two words: skiing and mountaineering.
