Intro
Ranger is the biggest line in Fischer's collection, a sign that freeride is on the rise in the Teutonic nations. The 108 is the second widest, ideal for versatile freeride and designed for long, easy-access descents and variable conditions. The modern shape has a rockered tip and a slightly raised tail with a rubber reinforcement and skin notch. Whether mounted with traditional or hybrid bindings, this crossover model straddles old- and new-school skiing; in essence a reliable ski ideal for a variety of uses.
On the snow
It takes just a few turns to feel in synch with this ski. Stable at all speeds on soft terrain, it floats like a dream in deep powder, and is supportive and responsive when carving. The Ranger 108 dampens vibrations on uneven terrain; though not a big mountain ski for hardened pros, it helps intermediate-advanced skiers meet the challenges of everyday freeriding. Depending on the length, this could be a good model for those straying off piste for the first time, including short, gentle uphills on skins. Easily maneuverable, this ski adapts quickly to tempo changes, instilling confidence. The flex is relatively soft, so best not be too aggressive in terms of jumps or speed, though the entire length of the ski flexes progressively. Edge grip is responsive and precise when carving turns on hardpack or steep terrain.
Lab
Slightly concave at the tip and concave at the tail, flat after ten passes. Structure applied with neat borders. Good edges 2.3 x 2.2 mm at 88.8°, base bevel 1.2°. Rough but well-set edges both in terms of angles and sharpness. Most skiers can take it out on the snow as is.
