Intro
It's highly unusual, but this year Völkl has come out with two new skis with 114 millimeter waist widths: the Revolt 114 and the Blaze 114, both of which complete their respective series. The Revolt line is developed for and used by pro skiers only, the 121 can always be found at the feet of Markus Eder. The Blaze 114 is different. It's a lightweight fat ski that wasn't designed for competitions, rather hunting for high-altitude powder stashes, and skiers who love to shred off-piste. One that holds up on all kinds of terrain and works very well as part of a touring setup.
On the snow
You feel its light weight right away, along with its stiffness, which may be due precisely to its lightweight construction. It's not a ski meant for progressive flex. It's meant to provide support in the turn without giving way as you push off in transition to the next one. The significant tip stays with you, floating nicely in deep pow. It's a ski designed to float, and it doesn't like an aggressive, big-mountain style. It responds well at high speeds, but you need to work harder at slower speeds, guiding the ski with your foot, so it takes a skier with good technique. It handles irregular terrain well and holds up when landing jumps. It crumbles crust like a cookie and flies over obstacles like a Tomahawk missile. A pin binding doesn't make much sense, unless you have a specific use case. Better a Shift, TR1, or something similar.
