Intro
Newly released for 23/24, this model is the evolution of the Hawk Ultra XTD with the Boa system for adjusting the lower foot via a metal cable running through three guides. The classic four-buckle version also remains in the catalog. This boot was created with the stated aim of enhancing ease of use through the inclusion of the Boa system, providing a more comfortable fit and hiking characteristics, but without compromising downhill fun.
Walking
Its strong features are its excellent foot roll, enhanced by the rockered sole, and swift and precise fit adjustment thanks to the Boa dial. The dial itself is bulky and placed laterally, meaning it’s sub-optimal on rocky terrain or with thick vegetation where it could snag. Hiking comfort is good but it walks like more rigid models which, given the flex and structure it possesses you’d expect it to be a touch more agile.
Lab
Entry and exit are as easy as you’d expect on a traditional overlap boot. The fit is comfortable and precise, with balanced volumes for average feet. The Boa dial is a great boon, as it allows tension to be adjusted by both when tightening and loosening it, rather than having to first loosen and then retighten it. The cuff buckles are simple to use, even when wearing gloves, and quite light and essential, making them ideal for Free skiing. Atomic's classic ski/walk system works well and also features a handy pull cord.
Skiing
Other strengths are the support offered if you find yourself in the backseat— where it forgives poor technique and errors in balance, and actively aids a central stance—and on traverses, where the upper buckles ensure that ankle and tibia are firmly anchored. The flex is softer than you might expect and not very progressive. When driven hard, the plastic tends to exceed its limits and the large shell volume makes it feel bulkier and heavier than it actually is. A versatile boot, thanks also to the GripWalk sole, providing terrain is not overly technical, and a comfortable all-rounder. Comfort and reliability, in addition to good thermal insulation, make this an ideal boot for professionals and resort skiers.
