Intro
The Austrian brand's broad offering for backcountry touring features three width options, with the medium-volume 100-millimeter Hawx Prime sitting right in the middle. After piloting Boa on the Ultra model—a change well-received by users—now all the Prime models include the Boa closure system on the shell, but also a not insignificant yet unrelated increase of over one hundred grams in weight. The use of PU for shell and cuff underscores the descent-oriented focus of this boot.
Walking
In hike mode, there's ample fore-aft cuff travel, more than enough to accommodate freerider walking needs, making these ideal for reasonably significant resort-accessed ascents. Features a sturdy midsole for walking and climbing rocky passages—an essential feature for technical terrain.
Lab
Boa robusto con possibilità di regolazione precisa e rotazione in entrambi in sensi, sporge parecchio dallo scafo ed è facile che sia di'ingombro nei passaggi stretti e rocciosi. The ski/walk lever is fiddly to operate and sits very low down when closed, meaning it could potentially interfere with correct closure of crampons. The cuff features two aluminum micro-adjustable buckles, specially shaped to allow easy operation when wearing gloves. Inside, there’s a robust alpine-styled booster and well-finished Mimic Elite liner in just the right thickness.
Skiing
The alpine-skiing focus quickly becomes apparent: after just a few turns its clear inputs are transmitted to skis swiftly and precisely. Flex is decent enough to meet the energy transmission needs of the average user, but pile on the power and you inevitably find the limits of what the plastic can support here. You can let the speed ramp up more on narrower skis as they exert less torsion to your setup. However the fatter your tools the smaller the margin for error when pushing performance limits. The footbed is very thin and cushioning feels poor on uneven surfaces, so you might want to consider replacing it with a thicker aftermarket insole. Broad range of users fairly large-volume feet looking for comfort.
