Intro
Together with the F1 SE, this boot is Scarpa's big news for this season. A crossover boot that is bound to give stiffer, heavier models a run for their money, it's the freeride version of the 4-Quattro, with cuff and shell made from renewably sourced plastics, a reinforced ski/walk mechanism, and a new cuff with vertebrae-style notches on the spine for better rear support.
Walking
Entry isn't easy and nor is it particularly comfortable. You can feel a lot of pressure on the ankle bone, the inside of the foot, instep and sole of the foot; most people will need a good bootfitting. That said, in terms of walkability it's the undisputed champion of its category, up there with the best striders in the Tour segment. Incredibly nimble, as well as sensitive on rocky terrain, it copies the movement of the shin with no friction. The ideal one-boot quiver for mountain guides and pro riders scoping out steep lines.
Lab
Four touring-style cable buckles and a tour hook on the ladder for the ascent, and a sturdy Booster strap with hook for quick fastening and release. It has a basic Intuition liner without any extra features. Watch out for the soft flaps at the back of the shell, which sometimes can make it tricky to get your foot in the liner. The tapered shape of the toe is more typical of lighter boots designed with a focus on the ascent. It has a GripWalk sole with a thick rubber midsole, ideal for technical terrain.
Skiing
In descent, you can immediately feel how its low volume makes this boot incredibly precise and technical. It has a stiff flex with a good strength-to-weight ratio. An efficient companion for long, technically challenging missions, it's dependable enough to take on high-altitude routes on committing terrain. It works well on skis up to 105 mm underfoot that aren't too stiff; any wider and you'd be better off with Light gear mounted with tech bindings. Charging at big mountain speeds and landing airs with heavy skis could be too much for the Grilamid. It offers good rear support in deep snow, you can lean back to get a response from the tail. It comes into its own on tight turns and compact terrain.
