Intro
A favorite of freerider Mali Noyes, as Salomon often likes to point out. The QST series was designed for freeride, undergoing a full makeover last season. Highlights include cap sidewall construction along the entire length for more fluid edge contact, reinforcements made from a carbon/flax weave to guarantee torsional rigidity and poplar core for pop and responsiveness. A titanal insert underfoot gives it an overall solid feel. This ski is designed for carefree carving and playing on bumps and powder.
On the snow
The Lumen 98's playful spirit longs for plentiful powder and kickers galore, a new school ski to its very core. But be careful using it for anything else; if you step on the gas or find yourself on firm terrain, the tip chatters incessantly and it can be difficult to control. In theory, the cork insert should eliminate vibrations completely, but in practice it just dampens them a little, making it somewhat twitchy. In powder, on the other hand, it's effortlessly fun. The progressive rocker is long at both ends, facilitating float, and the buttery soft tail is just crying out for some freestyle moves. This could be a good choice for tourers transitioning to freeride or wanting to try out some jumps and tricks. Also good for photoshoots, thanks to its iridescent base. If full-throttle charging is your thing, look elsewhere.
