Intro
The Swiss manufacturer has introduced the new Fusion series, which replaces the previous "Go" lineup. Among the most interesting innovations is a nose layup featuring flax fiber and a cork insert. These materials are employed to replace less eco-friendly plastic parts and provide good damping properties to absorb vibration, and so clearly an improvement on oil-based components. The 104 is the fattest in the series, so more suited to touring and resort days when powder is in the offing. The modern tip rocker is combined with a classic square-shaped tail with minimal rocker.
On the snow
Right from the first turns the skis' ability to flow well across challenging terrain and stick to the snow is immediately evident, delivering a ride which feels dependable and stable. It performs best through medium- and large-radius turns semi-carved at higher speeds, but edge-to-edge transitions are slow, making it necessary to dive into successive turns early. Somewhat heavy underfoot, the weight penalty isn't sufficiently offset by an equally significant increase in performance. Skis best limited to resort use with the occasional ascent from the top lift station. Performance varies based on the binding mounted: best to lean towards something with a bit more structure rather than a lightweight pin to obtain more graduated power transmission. The classic design of the tail forgives skiers who tend to ski in the backseat and represents a good freerider transition choice. With its traditional styling, this is not a ski for younger skiers or new-schoolers.
Lab
Concave from tip to tail, markedly so at tip and tail. Impossible to flatten. Shallow structure well applied. Not waxed. Good edges, 1.9 x 1.7 mm at 88.8°, base edge 0.97°, irregular. Edge set too aggressive at tip and tail, some rust. Tuning essential.
