Intro
Though very similar to the previous iteration in terms of graphics and build, this is actually an all-new model that's no longer 99 mm at the waist. Now a millimeter might seem entirely irrelevant, but a change like this turns the whole design on its head, including the turn radius, which has gone from 22 to 18 meters. It uses similar materials to other models in the M-Free category, with a core in poplar and PU, but has a more directional profile, with only a slight rocker in the tail. Weighing in at around 2 kg per stick, it's decidedly a downhill-oriented ski.
On the snow
Right from the first use you realize this is no mere ski touring toy. After a few meters you'll feel how substantial, beefy and structured this model is, making it perfect for deploying in sidecountry rather than full-on backcountry. Best to avoid mounting pin bindings, at the very least you'll need a classic step-in heel piece. It's not too stiff, and is nice and smooth with good snow feel on narrow and medium turns and excellent edge hold on hard terrain. Excellent for clients of ski instructors and mountain guides, those who starting out in freeride who want a little more width underfoot but not a specifically fat ski. The perfect partner for not-too-deep powder days or for carving a few groomers interspersed with linking short radius turns through sidecountry chop. A ski with a certain heft, requiring a skier with decent technique, which also more advanced riders will appreciate.
Lab
Slightly concave at the tail, fine after 10 passes. No structure, minimal wax. Reasonably good edges 1.9 x 1.5 mm at 88°, base edge 1.3°. Poor finishing especially on the base. Irregularities present throughout caused by a damaged grindstone. Edges need removing at tip and tail, easily remedied.
