Intro
The Wailer series earns the moniker carbon and makes up an all-new freeride ski range for the US manufacturer. It features a 15-meter radius across all widths and lengths, curiously atypical and a departure from the strategies most manufacturers use. Compared to the Kaizen, which sports a complete sheet of carbon, here the laminate is blended with glass fiber, while the ski has a 100% poplar wood core, meaning weight is shaved without compromising performance. In keeping with the new standards, DPS has used technologies based on bio-based resin for bonding the different layers and ABS sidewalls with Algal technology.
On the snow
Immediate positive vibe for many different skiers. Docile and intuitive performance. Easy to handle with no unpleasant surprises. Light on the foot, easy to steer throughout turns. Excellent float in not-to-deep powder even maintaining a central stance. Chatter starts to increase as speed and power creep up, making it clear that the ski provides good support providing it's not driven too hard, speeds are kept down, and the skier doesn't demand too much. Technical style is clearly American, meaning it's not a ski for carving immaculate large-radius, preferring instead more relaxed pivots and side slips, and deft, precise energy transfer. Overall it delivered a fun, well-balanced ski, which is ideal for groomers with the odd medium-length ascent in powder. Holds its own well in hardpack, providing speed is kept in check and you don't expect it to tackle icy couloirs.
Lab
Concave from tip to tail, not flat after 10 runs through the tuning machine. Structure applied using medium-wave technology and DPS's exclusive Phantom wax. Good edges, 1.9 x 2 mm at 88.1°, base edge 0.9°. Base finishing performed well, slightly less so on the sides. Can be skied straight from the factory.
