Intro
The new Maverick line is fruit of a collaboration with Freeride World Tour athletes, in particular Sage Cattabriga-Alosa and Craig Murray. A blend of ash and poplar is combined with carbon and titanal to give it a progressive flex and plenty of torsional rigidity, damping vibrations at high speed but also providing plenty of pop and good edge grip. The 115 is the beefiest in the line, a war horse for special occasions, like skiing extreme big mountain lines or jumping gargantuan cliffs.
On the snow
Clicking in to this ski for the first time, you immediately note its substantial girth, but it feels narrower and more agile, and is maneuverable at high speeds. Its big mountain performance reflects the powerful style of the Austrian freerider, preferring strong lines; steep, technical terrain; and fast, wide turns. This is a serious ski, more suited to former groomer skiers with a more traditional mindset than young freestylers. Weighing in at over 2 kgs (4.4 lbs.), it works for short sidecountry uphills, but much prefers a step-in binding. A good amount of skill is required, or at least power, to keep it under control during turns—it needs to be driven, especially when releasing. Also suitable for tree skiing thanks to the high-profile shovel rocker that always sticks out of the snow.
Lab
Concave at the tip and tail, waist perfect, not bad after ten passes through the machine. Medium structure of middling execution, waxed. Very good edges 1.8 x 2.2 mm at 89.2°, base edge 1.2°. Reasonably ok finish aside from a couple of rusty patches and uneven sharpness. Tuning is advisable.
