Intro
The Backland freeride touring series now only has four models, with two men's and two women's. Which actually most appropriately represent this segment, where lightness and performance come together to deliver the ideal compromise. Atomic's commitment to reducing CO2 emissions translates to an increased preference for wood rather than glass fiber. The sandwich features poplar and carob wood layers to create a core which is both lightweight and high performance. This is combined with a classic underfoot camber and classical spoon-shaped HRZN tech tip and tail to enhance the feel in powder.
On the snow
With its nearly 110 mm waist, we can say this ski borders on the realm of the fat ski. Don't expect it to perform well in icy conditions, which is a characteristic reserved for narrower models. It holds its own on hardpack providing you throttle back a little: this is clearly a directional ski with a shape designed to excel in soft snow and aimed at old-schoolers of all ages. It offers excellent float in powder. Depending on binding choice you can decide to ski this at the resort or mount a super-light binding for tackling long backcountry ascents. Ideal for a broad range of skiers, from beginners to experts, seeking a freetouring one-ski quiver that delivers reliable performance and fun skiing in varying backcountry conditions. The rocker aids turns in deep powder but chatters in firm conditions. It performs best when linking short- and medium-arc turns.
Lab
Tip and tail concave, improved after 10 passes through the tuning machine. Only smoothed and waxed. Decent edges 1.8 x 1.9 mm at 89.1°, tuning 1.1° different on each ski. Rough but correct finishing, we recommend having them tuned.
