Intro
Over ten years of research and development have led to the Hoji ski we see today, which has the major honor of bearing the nickname of the outstanding skier Eric Hjorleifson, who has given life to this US manufacturer's entire freeride series. An attractive, modern design featuring a decidedly new-school profile, geometries that are rarely seen in the Alps, and differing rocker profiles to offer a truly unique surfy feel. The innovative skin attachment system situated at the rearmost edge contact point saves precious grams and frees up space in the pack. With its 30-meter sidecut radius, this is not a ski that loves carved turns, favoring instead pivoting and slashing. We tested the 2023/24 version.
On the snow
You can feel the difference in how this skis right from the first turn. It requires a major adjustment to a new-schooler style for those wishing to exploit its potential to the full. The mount point set just behind the center performs best with a rear-leaning freestyle skiing style, which is necessary for performing acrobatic moves when skiing powder lines. The drastically reduced edge contact length is fantastic for bouncing off pillows and dancing through tight trees but needs careful handling in firmer, more challenging conditions: this is not a ski you can drive at full throttle in all conditions. On the uphill, the increased power—and with it weight—suggest this is more a ski for ascents in search of epic lines and floaty, fun powder descents, rather that for performance, speed and competition. It hugs terrain very well, is hard but responsive, and more than ever, this is a ski that says 'backcountry freestyle ski movie'.
Lab
Concave along the length of the ski, not flat after 10 runs through the tuning machine. Only sanded, no structure or wax. Good edges, 1.8 x 2 mm at 89°, base edge 1°. Rough finishing with rather blunt edges and jutting sidewall. Needs a full tune before use.
