Intro
For over four seasons now, Salomon's freeride touring offering has relied on the Shift Pro, itself derived from the original QST design. There are many reasons why this is an outstanding product: reliability and its ability to appeal to a wide range of users, enhanced comfort even for occasional use, and a blend of quality and features you’d expect from a boot in this class. A well-integrated ski/walk system derived from the S/Lab touring model which actions directly on the interior of the shell itself.
Walking
Swift and easy to put on, and an instantly comfortable, generous, and roomy fit. It’s ideal for those with wide feet and features a large heel pocket. Very high ankle pivot point: excellent rearward ankle flexion but with a long stride it tends to push the foot forward a little and push on the Achilles tendon. Walking performance is in line with other boots in this category, which is geared mainly towards resort skiers who embark on the occasional foray above the top lift.
Lab
Four micro-adjustable ergonomic buckles, extra power strap for optimal closure. The edges of overlap don’t fit perfectly if you have a high instep and tend to open when walking, meaning there’s a risk of snow entering on the up. The shell features Coreframe carbon inserts to stiffen the structure without adding weight, while a softer plastic insert on the shell facilitates foot entry. The Gripwalk sole provides excellent grip, and the liner features a soft rear gusset.
Skiing
An intuitive, user-friendly boot. Many users have found this boot’s feature set a convincing mix. The average freerider is after a no-hassle tool. First off, it needs to offer all-day comfort and warmth, and be free of complicated cables, laces and ratchets that need adjusting. They’re not even after extreme performance. The Shift Pro successfully ticks all these boxes. Uno scarpone unico per sciare in pista o bordo pista con attrezzi medio-strutturati, percorrere itinerari fuori pista con sci larghi, insomma difendersi senza mai brutte sorprese. Athletes will find it very soft, while those with good technique will find it offers consistent albeit imprecise performance. So this is not a boot for the discerning, but will please guided clients.
