Larger surface and new technologies to lighten the product. The goal? Lightness on the ascent and performance on the descent.

For some years now, Atomic’s freetouring line has been the ideal choice for skiers looking for a lightweight ski with good float, consistently ranking first in reviews for ease of use. The Backland 101 W is the new version of the old 98 W model, designed for women, as well as men looking for a light ski. For winter 2024–25 it gets a considerably thicker waist while barely tipping the scale.

Its increased width isn’t the only thing to change, the construction has been completely overhauled with a focus on sustainability. The old Carbon Backbone, an ultra-lightweight carbon insert designed to increase stability, has been replaced by an ash insert that, according to lab tests, seems to provide even more strength and stability. This modification, combined with some other clever tweaks in the production process, reduces its environmental impact by around 26% (based on the life cycle assessment of the Backland 102). Its HRZN tip has been given a 3D makeover for better float, further reducing weight up front and increasing maneuverability and precision at speed.

«Easy to maneuver during kick turns, its shape means you can easily take on steep climbs and diagonals»

Silvia Moser

Easy on the up and strong on the down, so goes the Austrian skimaker’s slogan, and our test feedback seems to back it up. Incredibly lightweight underfoot, the switch from carbon to ash makes it more supple than the previous iteration, which was prone to chatter. This version offers a smoother ride with less vibration at the tip. In ascent it feels like a light ski, taking verticals of 1,500 m or more in its stride.

product

«Easy on the up and strong on the down», so goes the Austrian skimaker’s slogan

Easy to maneuver during kick turns, its shape means you can easily take on steep climbs and diagonals. When it’s time to transition, in descent it’s a docile steed, fearless at high speeds and in the face of bumpy terrain. It floats well in powder, as long as it's not too deep, makes light work of chop and flies through the crust. Though it loses grip on hardpack and ice, reducing speed, it’ll get you home safe and sound.

For those looking for a powder-oriented ski we recommend the 108 W. For anyone looking for a more versatile ski, this may well be the better choice. As a lightweight ski, it requires a firm hand on hard, icy terrain.

The Brand

Atomic
Founded in 1955 in the heart of the Austrian Alps, in Altenmarkt, although Atomic has linked its name to competitive skiing (Hermann Maier and Marcel Hirscher say anything?) it is a brand closely associated with ski mountaineering and freeriding, probably the one with the widest range for backcountry skiing among the generalists. The headquarter, about 60 kilometers from Salzburg, is located just a few kilometers from the first slopes, allowing the first prototypes to be tested immediately. About 400,000 skis a year are produced in Altenmarkt and about a thousand people are employed. Atomic is an Amer Sports brand.
