Absolute fun
The freeride category marks the outer limit of our Buyer’s Guide, meaning skis which can just about be used for skinning by mere mortals—or that at least can be carried up—and the rest of the world. Outside our Freeride category, you’re inevitably tending towards a more inbounds concept with a downhill focus. After several seasons, we’ve decided to merge the Freeride award with the other categories, following a new concept for showing the results, with the Ski of the Year and three choices: Pro’s, People’s and Smart.
Ski of the year
This is the very first time DPS has won our Freeride awards. And it’s a well-deserved recognition. Kaizen 105 is not the top-performing ski, but one to keep in the trunk of your car for tackling demanding ascents, multi-day tours, steep descents and variable snow conditions. The price point won’t suit everyone’s pocket, but its true value is quickly justified: don them on and you instantly feel their pedigree.
Pro's choice
It’s not easy to ride a ski specifically designed for one of the fastest pro skiers on the planet, created with the aim of straight lining at any altitude and in any snow conditions. The reduced weight means you can tackle huge vertical. Recommended minimum cruising speed is 100 km/h. An alternative? K2 Mindbender 106C.
People's choice
The French manufacturer has always had a reputation for crafting user-friendly skis. And the Slap 104 is no different, delivering satisfying skiing for intermediate skiers all the way up to the most demanding experts. The waist size is perfect for tackling a range of diverse conditions, from resort skiing to big missions with huge vertical. The Black Crows Draco Freebird also gets an honorable mention.
Smart choice
Not a new model, but a safe bet thanks to its reliable performance in most of the winter conditions you’re likely to find. Agent 3 offers great float in light snow and deep powder, holds its own on hardpack with precise edge-holding, and deals with crud and wind-blown conditions admirably. All in a lightweight package. Check out also the Nordica Enforcer Unlimited 104.
