Until recently, there were two types of binding. The full pin and the step-in. The former has been the standard for all types of touring for the past thirty years, while the latter is the basic alpine binding which has been developed over the years to become a hybrid version that can be used for ascents, but up until a few years ago they weighed as much as the ski itself.
Today, we’re seeing the dawning of a new era. Numerous hybrid models are already available: pin toe pieces with alpine heel pieces, and toe pieces that be converted, swapped out, or removed completely to aid ascents. Multiple solutions to meet diverse needs. Most skiers don’t need Alpine World Cup release values. For them, any of the hybrid bindings will work fine.
Others are seeking to push their boundaries, both in speed and in the air, and are happy to carry the extra weight on the up to guarantee they have the power for the down. Regardless of the model, pre-releases are becoming increasingly rare. Springs, alloys and stainless materials have rapidly teleported us to a future that we’re already lucky enough to be enjoying the benefits of these last few seasons.
