Skis, something’s in the air
In a category as broad as this, the risk of homogenization is ever present. The vast majority of skis in this segment tick the two most important boxes, in that they’re both lightweight and easy to use. But there are still some models that stand out from the crowd and offer something new. Our awards have focused on the products that stand out in terms of tradition and innovation.
Ski of the year
Not, the heaviest, but not the lightest; not the easiest, but not the most demanding. This is, however, the most balanced ski in the category. It holds up everywhere, is light in ascent, while easy to handle and fun in descent, and unfazed by steep or committing terrain.
People's choice
The 100 mm model is easy to handle and versatile, as well as fun in powder. It was a close call between this and the Zag Ubac 95, but the Dynastar came out on top as it helps skiers to grow and improve, whereas the Zag model, though excellent, is more limiting when it comes to continued improvement.
Pro's choice
It’s the same old Navis, which has remained basically unchanged for the last few seasons. This is a heavier, stiffer ski for riders with strength and good technique. The Faction Agent 2 came close, but lost out due to the overly short length used during testing.
Smart choice
The prototype of a new subcategory: a little extra weight means more versatility, especially when it comes to crud, compact snow and powder. But it helps you to improve and, like the Navis, doesn’t penalize you for not having perfect technique.
