The average alpine touring outing involves much more skinning up the mountain than skiing down, making climbing skins one of the most important parts of any setup

Race Skins of the Year - Pomoca Race Pro

In specific situations, something from Pomoca’s vast range—or a rival brand—might perform better. But overall, this skin comes out on top, excelling in variable conditions and especially on powdery winter snow. With its dense plush, it needs a break-in period to reach peak performance, and glide can be improved with an additional speed treatment. The collection also includes the Race Explore, for less extreme use; the Race Pro Vertical, which has a lighter backing but the same plush; the 55 mm Race Pro Slide, for less steep on-piste races; the Race Pro Grip for steep, icy terrain; and the Race Pro Sprint.

Tour Skins of the Year - Pomoca Tour Pro

With the old name (Climb Pro S-Glide) or this new one, it remains a leading benchmark in the world of mixed plushes courtesy of the balance between glide, grip, plush durability and treatments—all confirmed by our tests. It's always one of the fastest—up there with full mohair models—and prevents the formation of ice, while the stiff backing material helps it to adhere to the ski. The Pomoca tip hook is up there with the best, and the soft glue provides good tack, even at low temperatures.

Free Skins of the Year - Contour Hybrid Mix

In use, both grip and glide are up there with the best, making it a benchmark in the Tour and Free categories for all-round use, alongside Pomoca’s Tour Pro. It stands out for its excellent balance of performance, reliability and practicality. It uses a hybrid adhesive that offers good tack yet is easy to rip—even on wide skis and at low temperatures. It's not quite as good as the Tour Pro on dry, cold snow, but it's an excellent product you can rely on mission after mission.

Ski poles: they’re in control

They’re an excellent investment. The least expensive piece of kit, but one that has an outsized influence on technique, both on the way up, and especially on the way down

Safety, you’d better go prepared

Avalanches make no distinction between experts and beginners, and when something happens, what matters is clarity of mind, the ability to communicate, and the ability to act quickly as a team
