Compared to a few years ago, ever lighter materials and improved system efficiency have meant these products have become much more attractive — both in terms of weight and comfort, as well as ease of use. Historically, the market has been split between brands using canisters, which are undoubtedly more responsive, lightweight, and economical, and those brands that have opted to use electronic systems, which offer many advantages regarding practicality and end-user safety.
Litric is Ortovox’s patented system. Released two years ago, it’s been hailed as a real revolution in terms of efficiency, and has been extensively tested. Lightweight, easy to use, reliable: these are the main features that have made it popular amongst ski tourers seeking a product which offers safety and allows them to practice using it before heading into the mountains. The system takes around 25 minutes to recharge, meaning you can practice deploying it without the hassle of having to substitute the canister every time. Plus, as the system is electrically operated it can be transported by plane — an essential consideration for anyone seeking to travel to overseas destinations.
The Litric system is positioned in the upper left-hand part of the back panel and remains well-balanced even with an empty pack thanks to the semi-rigid back panel which ensures optimal weight distribution. All recharging, operating and deflation of the airbag itself are conducted with ease by means of a circular zip which opens almost completely to provide swift access to the stowing area. The ergonomic trigger handle is easy to use even when wearing thick gloves and affixes to the left shoulder strap. The airbag is made from extremely durable material and re-folding is swift and easy.

The convenience of the Litric Tour Avabag lies also in the fact that the front storage compartment can be swapped to increase capacity, with size options ranging from 16 to 36 liters for the S version, and 18 to 40 liters for the L version. The interchangeable compartment (the 28L is large enough for day trips) features a dedicated section for stowing shovel and probe, a spacious gear pocket, and a section containing a helmet carry mesh and skis/snowboard/ski poles carry leash. The pack features two axe/trekking pole attachment points as well as the possibility to carry a rope. The hip belt features a materials loop and classic safety leg strap.
So in summary, this is a perfect pack for anyone seeking a compromise between lightness and capacity, and for those who want just that little more support for carrying extra weight.
