During a typical ski mountaineering season, it is crucial to periodically check the condition of your ski edges. These are often put to the test by impacts with exposed rocks, roots, and other natural obstacles, which can compromise their performance and shorten their lifespan.

Keeping the edges in good condition is not just about performance, but also safety. A well-sharpened edge ensures better grip on hard and icy snow, making it easier to control the skis and improving stability on more technical traverses. Similarly, removing burrs and rust not only enhances glide and turning response, but also prevents premature wear, extending the lifespan of the equipment.

This operation can also be done independently, with a little attention and good manual skills. You only need a few essential tools, such as a diamond file or an edge stone, and to follow a few key steps: carefully clean the edges, remove any impurities, re-sharpen the edges with precise and gentle movements, and finally polish the surface to reduce friction.

Spending the right amount of time on ski maintenance not only enhances the downhill experience but also allows you to tackle more challenging conditions with greater safety and control.
